I made my first funeral urn for my grandfather's ashes and recently another for those of my grandmother. Making meticulously crafted urns a very meditative process and I the final pieces can be sculptural objects of meditation. I enjoy working at this scale and showcasing the uniqueness of the wood that I work with. When designing, I use the golden ratio as to derive all the proportions and placement of elements. The form of the box is then a loom on which I weave the different colors and grains of wood together. I'm honored to be able to create these lovely boxes, I strive to make them unique enough for the mortal remains of unique individuals.

Featuring a design of 277 circles that wraps around three sides, laid out and carved by hand. This Funeral Urn is made of Reclaimed Cherry and Under-Water Recovered Beech salvaged from the depths of Lake Superior. It sits horizontally on the built-in base which is also a repository for small treasures and correspondences with a magnetic cover, providing access to the interior panel. It also has a separate stand made of underwater beech that holds the urn up-right and slightly tilted back. Sitting vertically at this angle allows light to cascade across the carved surface in an entrancing way. A unique labor of love to house the ashes of a loved one.
